In 2017, the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of China cosigned the Agreement of the "Mutual Academic Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications” for Cyprus and China, which is expected to contribute substantially to the strengthening of the two countries' relations in the field of education and especially the consolidation of cooperation in the field of Higher Education.
Under this Agreement, the degrees awarded by the Cypriot universities at academic and professional level are recognized in China and the degrees awarded by the Chinese universities, are recognized in Cyprus.
The fact that similar Agreements have been either signed or are going to be signed with other countries, reveal that other countries recognize Cyprus’ higher education system as well as the quality of education offered.
What are the main characteristics of Cyprus Higher Education System?
Cyprus signed the Bologna Process in 2001 and since then is participating in the European Higher Education Area. Cyprus Higher Education System is using the European Credit Transfer Units (ECTS), is promoting the mobility of students, academics and researches and is focusing on the Assurance – certification of the quality of the offered education. Government’s policies focus on creating an innovative, competitive and high standard higher education system and on making Cyprus an International Educational and Research Center.
Τhere are eight university institutes operating in Cyprus. Three of them are public universities; the University of Cyprus, the Open University of Cyprus which focuses on distance learning education, and the Cyprus University of Technology which focuses on applied research. There are also five non-puplic/private Universities; the European University of Cyprus, the Frederick University, the University of Nicosia, the Neapolis University and the University of Central Lancashire Cyprus. The universities of Cyprus are internationally recognized and are included in the International Ranking Lists, in very prominent rankings.
Higher education in Cyprus is also provided by a number of State Higher Education Institutions, none of which has university status. The programs of study are accredited by The Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education. The Mediterranean Institute of Management, which operates under the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance, offers academic postgraduate programs of study in Business and Public Administration. The rest of the State Institutions of Higher Education, offer vocational programs of study with a duration ranging from one to three academic years.
Currently, many Private Institutions of Higher Education are registered with the Ministry of Education and Culture. Private Institutions of Higher Education do not have university status but they offer both academic and vocational programs of study at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Their programs of study are evaluated and accredited by The Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education.
All universities and most of the Higher Education Institutions have programs of study in English Language.
Having made quite significant efforts, the number of foreign students choosing Cyprus Universities and Institutions for their studies has doubled in recent years. In 2017 there are 21.093 foreign students in Cyprus Universities.
What measures are received in order to ensure the quality of Higher Education in Cyprus?
Great importance is given to Quality Assurance and to Certification and Recognition of Qualifications, in order to ensure that the programs offered and the titles of study are in line with European standards and compete with European and international levels. The Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education is the competent Authority responsible for ensuring the quality of higher education in Cyprus and for supporting the processes provided by the relevant Legislation, for the continuous improvement and upgrading of higher education institutions and their programs of study.
