Speech by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alecos Michaelides, on the occasion of Celebration Event for the Launch of “CYhere” held in Limassol on Thursday 21st September 2017.

Your Excellency Mr. Huang Xingyuan, Fellow Speakers and Honoured Guests,
It is with great pleasure that I accepted your invitation to participate as a speaker at this event and I would like to congratulate “CYhere” on its excellent initiative. Since all of us here are stakeholders, the success of this new generation internet-platform, which was commercially launched in July 2017, constitutes a common goal. I have browsed through the website and I have found it to be very user-friendly and informative and I am sure that it will serve the needs of its main target audience which is the Chinese market.
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has built strong ties with the People’s Republic of China and we consider China to be a leading player in the international business field.
During the past four years, a steady increase in the number of Chinese investments in land has been observed, which consequently led to the increase of applications for residency in Cyprus from Chinese citizens.
In addition, our Government is actively encouraging the strengthening of business ties between our two countries. This was illustrated by our President’s, as well as our Minister’s official visits to China over the past couple of years.
Air connectivity between our countries has a major role to play for further encouraging Chinese investors and other interested parties to visit Cyprus. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and its Department of Civil Aviation, have a major role to play and are actively involved in enhancing air connectivity between Cyprus and China.
Since air transport is the only mode of transport which links Cyprus to the rest of the world, the improvement of air connectivity will also encourage, the local population to travel to China, for business or pleasure.
At present there are no direct flights between China and Cyprus, but a Cyprus registered air carrier has shown keen interest in initiating direct flights between our two countries as from next year.
Our two countries, have initialed a bilateral Air Services Agreement on the 5th of April 2000. The signature, ratification and enactment into law of this Agreement is still pending. In October 2015 we also proposed the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries, regarding both scheduled and charter flights and we are looking forward to resuming talks on this issues with the Chinese Civil Aviation Authorities the soonest possible.
Dear Friends, may I once again take this opportunity to thank “CYhere” for its invitation and to reiterate our Government’s commitment to strengthen ties with China, at all levels.
Thank you for your attention.
